VII    Nike

To win glory, stepping into the chariot of honoured Nike: for to one man only does the goddess grant to jump into her great carriage.

Simonides, Greek Lyric III, ca. 570 – 470 BCE

Nike was the winged goddess of victory. She delighted in competition, but valued fair play; her strength subdued anger and prevented cheating. It was her right to both declare and reward the winner in all contests.
