I am the First Face
The Maker of Masks
The Mistress of Illusion
The Mistress of Reality
I am the One
Who passes
between worlds.
A living mask bursts out from the darkness of a cave. The Magician is the force that can make something out of nothing, the force that can manifest itself out of the void and out into the world. She is the confidence to exist as one's Self, the power to appear and to act as one wills.
Can we recall the original impulse that brought us into being? And so learn to be true to our authentic selves? Have the confidence to live our own lives and no other?
The Magician holds the power of originality, but the mask also signifies illusion. We all wear masks to present ourselves to the world and to do work in the world. We are required to wear clothes to cover our naked selves, and much of the impression we make upon others, or that they make upon us, is guided by the choice of this clothing. The clothes are not who we are, but are a manifestation of how we wish to appear.
Remember that our very bodies are the masks our souls wear, how our soul happened into flesh at the time of our birth. Our bodies both are and are not our true selves. Illusion is joined to the reality of existence, as shown by the living eyes glittering within the mask.
The Magician is one who crosses the border between reality and illusion, and who has command of both. She challenges us to understand what is real and what is not and when these two might combine and might not be just one or the other. One who plays with both illusion and reality is the Trickster, Coyote. And jackal-headed Anubis is the Conductor of Souls, one who passes between the material and the spirit worlds. The animal form of the Magician’s mask recalls both of these beings. This is the Crone manifesting in the form of her familiar, her first companion, and her aide in the making of magic. Magic crosses these boundaries between worlds, bringing the energies of spirit into form, and dissolving forms back into essences. Magic can do the same for us, should we have the courage and the confidence to take it into our hands and shape it to our will.
